There are 78 cards in a standard Tarot deck, which is a lot to learn and remember for the Tarot novice. A standard deck of Tarot cards normally contains 78 cards, which are divided into two groups. In Numerology the number 1 represents beginnings and the 4 Ace’s of the Minor Arcana each symbolize a beginning in one of the 4 classical elements of life.
The classical elements of water, fire, earth and air are represented by the suits of the Minor Arcana as Cups, Wands/Rods, Coins/Pentacles and Swords respectively. Water (Cups) represents emotional relationships. Fire (Wands/Rods) represents the home and work place. Earth (Coins/Pentacles) represents wealth and possessions and Air (Swords) represents life’s challenges and storms.
Therefore combining the knowledge of the classical elements with Numerology the Ace of Cups represents the beginning of a new emotional relationship.

Each number in Numerology has positive and negative attributes and, as the suit of swords in Tarot tends to the negative, the cards in this suit should be interpreted with the negative numerology aspects in mind but not as a rule.
The Tarot Minor Arcana cards numbered 10 are similar to Ace’s when using numerology to reduce 10 to a 1 (1+0 = 1). However the difference is that the new beginning represented by the 10 is following a complete cycle of the 1 to 9. As the Ace of Cups represents a new emotional relationship the 10 of Cups can represent an existing relationship changing to a new form of emotional relationship. The 10’s also represent the extremes of their element. The 10 of swords, reputed to be the worst card in the Tarot deck, representing total and utter defeat but at the same time the end marks a new beginning.
