It is up to the suppliers and duty free and travel retail operators to orchestrate growth in tandem with the increase in passenger numbers and that means understanding the diverse groups of customers entering the market. Market knowledge combined with retail experience will be the major revenue growth levers.

What type of challenges have you faced while organizing this event so far? OC: Singapore is an ideal venue for a high profile conference and exhibition event as it has excellent connections, efficient services, and delightful people so the challenges we face are largely those we set ourselves. We are constantly trying to improve and better serve our members and the industry as a whole.

TFWA Asia Pacific and Gate ONE2ONE is intended to attract a wider audience than just the duty free and travel retail community and one challenge has been how to communicate that message and secure the participation of major airports and service providers in Asia Pacific and beyond. We have addressed this by visiting key players in the region, explaining the concept, and inviting them to join us. Thus we can be sure of a vibrant and highly effective forum.

In a fast developing market meeting the right contacts is essential to growing one’s business so we have laid on plenty of opportunities to network. The challenge here is to keep the offer fresh and we have selected venues and themes for our social events, which are appropriate to our audience and our location.

We believe we have met the challenges and look forward to a highly professional duty free and travel industry business networking event. panning almost 100 hectares (approximately 250 acres) and covering a running a length of three kilometers, the new Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) completed its second and final phase of opening on March 26,2008.Designed—by British architect Norman Foster (HSBC Tower Hong Kong,Wembley Stadium London)—and constructed in four years at a cost of US$2.7 billion,Terminal 3 is larger than all of London Heathrow’s terminals combined and could house well over 160 soccer pitches under its roof.

Terminal 3 has the capability to eventually bring BCIA’s capacity to seventy-five million passengers per year, a considerable jump from the airport’s fifty-three million in 2007 and to relieve the pressure on the airport’s two existing, aging terminal buildings. Operational just in time for the Summer Olympics in Beijing this coming August, it is expected that almost five million travelers will pass through the new terminal during the event.

With the move complete, Terminal 3 will act as the hub for the country’s flag carrier Air China, most Star Alliance carriers (including Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, Thai Airways, and Lufthansa) and Oneworld partner airlines (among those British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and Qantas). Broken into three separate concourses—C, D, and E—one section (concourse D) will be temporarily dedicated to charters flying into the city for the Olympics, with concourse E being utilized for international departures and arrivals.

Concourse C will be used for both domestic and international check-in and domestic departures. Terminal 3 also boasts a stateof-the-art baggage handling system and core operating systems designed and managed by Unisys. Also notable at Terminal 3 is the inclusion of a 3,800-meter (over two miles) long, 60-meter wide runway built specifically to accommodate the new Airbus A380.
