Immune System Care
People will get sick all year round, but the winter months seems to be an specifically hard time of year for the immune system. There may be a reason that the winter months is dubbed “flu season.” Cold temperature, harsh conditions–these all help make the immune system weaker. It’s hard to fight off a flu when you’re fighting to stay warm. The insufficient access to fresh air and being made to spend most of your time indoors where it is stuffy can make it very difficult for your body to keep a cold from setting in. Cold and flu germs appear to reproduce faster in a house that keeps the windows closed all the time. Here are a couple of things that you can do to help out your immune system.
Exercise frequently. Regular training makes you sweat and increases your endorphins. In addition to helping you remain fit and sustain your weight, regular exercise can help boost your immune system too. The endorphins that will rise through your body don’t just help keep your mood elevated during the cold and dark months of winter. They help a person’s immune system remain vitalized and that makes it easier to keep infections from setting in. There have been studies done that state people who exercise five out of seven days a week take half as much sick time as people who don’t get that same level of exercise in the winter. Think about getting an active hooby such as gardening.
Go get yourself a massage. Do you really need an excuse to treat oneself to a day of pampering? In particular, Swedish rubs have shown to be helpful in preventing colds and flues. Massages may help raise your blood circulation and will stimulate the cells that are most appropriate in keeping cold and flu germs from infecting the body. That form of massage can make it easier to relax. If you aren’t tensed up from anxiety, it is easier to try and do all sorts of things.
You could be tempted to lock yourself away from social contact for a few months. The less time you spend with others, the less likely you will be to come into contact with something that makes you sick, right? Technically that is true. The fact that social interaction, particularly with folks you like (your friends) lifts your mood is also true. We aren’t sure why but the body is a lot more powerful when you are content. Afternoons of laughter, friendship and fun are generally vital for your health! Your friends should not be avoided. There are lots of things that you can do to combat whatever germs you pick up but there isn’t anything that replicates the endorphins and chemicals that get released when you’re having a fun time with friends.
Keeping healthy and balanced over the winter months doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, a number of the things that you might be tempted to avoid may be the very things that help you stay healthy. Talk to your doctor before you get wrapped up in a different sort of immune booster. Your physician could be able to offer you some surprising advice for fighting off illness during “flu season”.
