We Real Cool

“We Real Cool” is about young yellers who are enjoying their life in poolroom. The poet Gwendolyn Brooks outstandingly portrayed the young gang’s activities at their school age. She also tremendously pointed out the worst picture of society that the youth is busy in plying pool and they have no worries about themselves, even, society do not take responsibility. It is a beautifully written and most renowned poem of Gwendolyn Brooks which directly affects the mind and consciousness of reader. The rhyming word “We” in a sense gnaw the readers about the collective responsibility of the society. The verses of poem are defined separately to examine the thesis of each verse.“We real cool. We Left school. We” The first verse gives start point to make clear the main theme of the poem. In this verse poet express the emotions and feeling of the ganged boys. They are feeling very cool to leave their school, now they are free of all worries that they are facing in school. They are enjoying dropping out of school; consider it most amusing moment of life to stay free, play pool, and do adventures. “Lurk late. We Strike straight. We”The rhyming word is linking the gang’s activities that they wait till night covers the land with darkness. They wait and hide to attack at night. The poet have beautifully expressed and linked the criminal activities at night with the boys at poolroom. On the other hand, she also portrayed a shady picture of society. She interlinked the boys out of school and the criminal activities at night. The pool players whom do not go to school wait for darkness and then devil’s functions will start in shape of criminal activities.“Sing sin. We Thin gin. We”Here the poet writes about the violent tones of gang. She beautifully contrasts the two lines “sing sin” and “thin gin”. There is a deep interrelation between both of lines “sing sin” and “thin gin” denotes to the power of the gang. It is about the violent behavior and powerful attitude of the gang. The verse is about the loudness and power of gang which actually not giving them constructive preference. On the other hand, it is also an awakening call to the authorities to take serious measures about the powerful and violent gangs.“Jazz June. We Die soon.” This ending verse is about the pleasure of the gang boys. The poet writes about the pleasure of boys that are in poolroom and involved in many other activities. She said that they do jazz in June. The selection of June is due to most relaxed month in the year. It is time when everyone chill up and do pleasure for self relaxation. At the same time, the poet also include “We die soon” which means life of a gangster is very short it could not be guaranteed to live long, so, “We die soon” is about the end of time. The poet have brilliantly attach the two words “Jazz” and “Die”, it relates to the lively life and the end of time which is always a part of ganged boys.
