Creating Autoresponder Emails That People Love To Open by Rach

How many of your remember the days when you could walk into a store in town and be
greeted with a cheerful wave and “Hey there Fred!” by the owner?

Made you feel good huh? Knowing that someone knows you well enough to know your
name, ask how things were going and really took the time to listen to your reply.
You could have a conversation that would last more than just the cursory “Hi”
“Thanks” “Bye”
Of course this level of service and communication should be the minimum standard
for customer support in the offline world. In the real world the owner of the store
needs to have this personal contact with you. They know that it is this personal
touch that could mean the difference between you returning to their store or
heading down the road to Stanley’s store.

Unfortunately when you have a business on the Internet customer service like this is
almost impossible to achieve. However when you have autoresponder emails as a part
of your marketing, you can achieve something pretty close to this.

Why should you personalise your emails?

Can you remember the first time that you received an autoresponder email with your
name on it that addressed you personally throughout the message? I actually do, and
I thought that that was pretty cool. I knew that it was automated, but even now I
still feel obliged to keep reading because the message feels like it is directed at
me personally. Somehow it was now even more up to me whether I responded or not so I
had better at least consider what was on offer.

And apparently I am not alone. Research has shown that autoresponder emails that are
personalized with the person’s first name are opened more often, and those people
are generally more receptive to the contents of the email message and even better,
are more likely to respond to it.

In fact I received an email the other day that did not have my name on it – know
where that went? Yup, straight to ‘Trash’. The sender didn’t even care enough about
their list to address the email to anyone specific so it wasn’t going to contain
anything that was going to be especially relevant to me.

The crazy part is that there is no excuse because Autoresponder emails can be set up
to address people by their first or last name – or both. In fact, there is quite a
bit of personalized information that can be added, depending on the autoresponder
that you are using.

So how do you personalise your autoresponder emails?

This is all done thanks to a series of codes within your email autoresponder. Each
autoresponder will use different codes to insert the information in your
messages. You simply write your message, and put the codes where you want the
personalized information to appear. For instance, your message may start out with
‘Hello (code for first name)! In this case, the person’s first name will be inserted
where that code is.

It is that simple. You write one message, use the code wherever you want the
personalization, then, no matter who that one email is sent out to, their personal
information will appear where the codes are.

So where does the autoresponder get the personal information from?
From the form that your customer fills in when they request their free eBook, video,
lesson or other freebies that you offered to them to entice them to give you their
details.
Usually their first name and email address is enough. Ask for more detail than that
and you may run the risk of becoming too personal too fast – people don’t like that,
especially online.

Take a look around the control panel of your autoresponder and find out what type of
personalization you can add to your autoresponder emails. You may be pleasantly
surprised at the improved results!
