The type of basic grooming equipment you need there’s not much of it, in any case—depends on the type of dog you have. And you don’t always have to buy it before you get the dog. Sooner or later, however, you will need these items: Collar and leash. In many areas, particularly urban areas, you are legally required to keep your dog on a leash. lf you have a larger dog, you will also need a chain choke collar. This is, as the name suggests, a chain that can be loosened or tightened as required. It’s a valuable aid when you’re obedience training a dog, and will restrain a large dog from taking you for a walk, rather than the other way around. The chain forms a collar, and if the dog lunges, the chain tightens automatically and restrains him.
Always use a chain choke with care if you’re careless you can, literally, choke the dog; at the least you can make him very uncomfortable and cause him to cough. Let your veterinarian demonstrate how to use the chain and where it should, and should not, lie on the dog’s neck. Buy a chain choke collar that is one inch longer than the measurement round the largest part of your dog’s neck. • Nail clippers. Unless a dog exercises enough on hard ground to keep his nails worn down, you will have to clip them. Use only clippers intended for dogs, not those intended for people. Your veterinarian will recommend a brand, and detailed instructions for clipping a dog’s nails are given in the chapter on grooming. Brush and comb.- The length of the dog’s coat determines the type of brush and comb you’ll use. Refer to the section on grooming and the illustrations there to decide what’s best for your dog.
