Liverpool travel to Molineux to face Wolves in Saturday’s early kick-off for a game that many would have predicted to have been between two teams with differing aspirations
The home side were expected to struggle this season, and have done for the most part, whilst the Reds would have anticipated this trip to bolster their points tally in the battle for a possible Champions League spot.
Objectives have changed drastically for the away side however, and they find themselves in the precarious situation of possibly seeing their opponents, who sit 19th, go two points behind them should they be defeated.
That is a very realistic possibility, with new boss Kenny Dalglish still needing to repair a rotten record that has seen them win just once away from Anfield all season.
They will also have the disastrous 1-0 defeat that set the wheels in motion for former boss Roy Hodgson’s departure in the reverse fixture at Anfield a little over three weeks ago very much still fresh in the memory.
This could come as a benefit to Dalglish’s side, who will still be smarting from that loss to a side who were then bottom of the table and desperate to bounce back.
Team news
Wolves could be set to field new signing and Reds old boy Adam Hammill, who joined from Barnsley during the week and will be desperate to prove to his former employers that he is good enough for the top flight.
George Elokobi is still missing as he serves the final game of his three-match ban, whilst David Edwards could make the bench as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake however is still an absentee for Wolves and will play no part due to a calf strain.
Liverpool will need to check on the health of Serbian winger Milan Jovanovic, who has been suffering from illness and has not taken part in training.
They will also still be without captain Steven Gerrard, who serves the last of his three-match ban for his dismissal against Manchester United in the FA Cup.
Jamie Carragher is recovering well for the Reds but this game comes too soon as he is anticipated to return next month.
