The Black Cats had record signing Asamoah Gyan to thanks as his last-gasp goal secured a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in the Wear-Tyne derby last weekend. The draw meant Sunderland continued to occupy the sixth spot on the league table with 34 points from 23 games. Manager Steve Bruce was satisfied with the result, but was shocked immediately after the game as star striker Darren Bent handed in a transfer request. Bent is likely to move to Aston Villa this week.
Meanwhile Blackpool will be aiming to bounce back from a 3-2 loss to West Brom last week. David Vaughan had put Blackpool in front, but a brace from Peter Odemwingie and a goal from James Morrison meant that Gary Taylor-Fletcher’s goal on 80 minutes was mere consolation. With 28 points from 21 games, Blackpool are comfortably placed on the league table, but manager Ian Holloway will be aware that a few losses can reverse all that. He will also be concerned about the possible departure of Charlie Adam, who has been the star player for the Seasiders this year. Adam has evoked interest from Birmingham and Newcastle.
