In three lines, creator Tom Kapinos summed up everything that is great about his hit series Californication. Now two episodes into its fourth season, Californication has proven to be more than a carefree show about a mediocre writer and his wild wayward ways with the women. And, that has a lot to do with his relationship with his daughter, Becca (Madeleine Martin). She returns to the forefront in Episode 4.12, adding her usually emo personality and blunt family commentary that is a perpetual stab to Hank’s integrity.
Ten minutes into Episode 4.12, “Suicide Solution,” we were taken to a scene taken right from The Sopranos. Moody, much like Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) in The Sopranos series finale, lies on Charlie’s (Evan Handler) couch with his hands crossed across his chest, as if he were in a coffin. While the subtle jab would indicate a man on the way to the grave, Kapinos was creating more of a metaphorical picture – called out by Becca (Madeleine Martin) later in the episode. “Shouldn’t it be hard?” Becca says to Hank in the guitar shop. “I mean, isn’t that pretty much what happens after the final straw. It’s impossible to make things go back to the way they were.” Hank choices do have consequences that could lead to irrevocable ruin – if only, of his family. As he stated in a drug induced letter to Becca, mentally he is a child though his “man’s body” brings out all sexual shenanigans and interludes on Californication.
But what has to change? That’s the beauty of this show. However much Hank tries to change, sin and lust are always at his doorstep and it’s near impossible for a weak man of the flesh like Hank to refuse. He’s already started the season with a new young nineteen year old sex friend Sasha Bingham (Addison Timlin). Who will most likely be an added problem in his legal matters with his statuatory rape case with Mia (Madeline Zima) and the ensuing flirtatious love affair with his lawyer Abby (Carla Gugino). Needless to say, when either relationship comes out, it won’t help to repair his relationship with his daughter.
The gross factor has also come into play in one of the most bizarre scenes to date. Marcy woke up giving Hank a tug, while Charlie walked in naked to proposition the two for a three way.
What’s next? Now that Eddie (Rob Lowe) has been introduced we’re starting to see a few more similarities with Entourage. Eddie is the wild man much like Billy Walsh (Rhys Coiro). He calls Hank’s manager Charlie a suit, similar to how Billy called Vinny’s (Adrian Grenier) manager Eric (Kevin Connolly) a suit on Entourage. Being that the two shows share so many similarities, it wasn’t particularly the best route to take with the character dynamic, but hopefully it will change as the season progresses. It’s okay for Californication to stay playful like Entourage, but it needs to continue maintain its own life especially with Californication Season 5 already a signed and set for production. Also, we’ll see just how Hank’s drug induced “note” to Becca is taken into consideration by his family, friends and lawyer.
The deeper father-daughter tale raises the bar on the scandalous thrill ride, keeping Cali as one of the best series on TV.
