Art Reproduction History

The art reproduction techniques are rapidly advanced during the past two decades. In 1789, fine art reproduction was done by lithography in Germany. Prior to this the relief method was used to make the printing plates. The printing and non-printing areas are on the same plane in Lithography. The principle of lithography reproduction art is the repellence between oil and water chemically. On special limestone designs are painted with crayons or ink. Then the stone is moistened using water leading to the acceptance of areas not covered by crayons. When an oily type of paint is used with the help of a roller, it adheres to the drawing only and not to the wet parts of the stone. Finally paper is pressed against the drawing and the print is made.

Offset Printing

Perhaps many people are familiar with offset printing as it is still in use today. It took over the lithograpy but it is often applied in combination with lithograpy so as to make a better result. In this technique the drawing is offset or transferred from the plate to a blanket that is made of rubber. It has a flat carrier of image in which the ink rollers are fitted. The image gets ink from these rollers and the non-printing areas goes for a water-based film and hence are free of any ink. The offset paper printing was developed in 1903 in US and is still used widely.

Opaque projector is applied in oil painting reproducitons too although many artists also start by their handmade sketch. But use this machine is very useful and would save a lot of time.
