Moles – abnormal growths of pigmented skin cells – may have been considered attractive in Marilyn Monroe’s time, but in our age of Hollywood effects and photoshop, anything but clear, smooth skin can be cause for self-esteem issues. Are there medical reasons to remove moles?
Yes – but not at home! Home removal is strictly a cosmetic decision. Medically – though rare – there can be important reasons to remove moles. In some cases, moles can be cancerous, and will need to be removed and biopsied by a professional. Things to look for:
– changes in the mole’s shape, color, or size
– A sudden itching or pain
– The sudden emergence of a new mole, or moles,
– Oozing, puss, or bleeding
If you observe any of these signs in your moles, it’s probably not a good idea to pursue any sort of home removal solution. You should immediately go and see a doctor in this case.
With normal “healthy” moles, how about at home removal? Ask around, and you’ll be presented with hundreds of folk remedies, some of which have very strong supporters. You may be advised to cover the mole in duct tape for a month, of to paint over it with all manner of shellac, turpentine, or nail polish! Mole removal by a doctor involves deep cutting and stitches or cauterization – obviously this isn’t something you should attempt on your own. There are a number of emerging treatments that can cause moles to shrink, fade, or even disappear entirely. Do your research, and only try treatments that are proven reliable.
