EMR Meaningful Use Defined

With regards to electronic medical records (EMR) the term “meaningful use” has created quite a bit of confusion. However, with both core objectives and menu options now in place, past confusion has evolved into a much clearer understanding of meaningful use. This article will discuss some of the core objectives and menu options that comprise the meaningful use standard of measure. These steps must be taken in order to qualify for the stimulus funds made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

For meaningful use guidelines to be satisfied here are a few of the core objectives that are required:
-Physicians must check drug to drug and drug-allergy interactions.
-Physicians must use computerized physicians order entry (CPOE) on at least 30% of unique patient medications.
-Physicians must maintain an active medication list for at least 80% of unique patients with at least one entry.
-Keep an up-to-date list of the current diagnosis for 80% of unique patients.
-Maintain active medication allergy list for patients.
-Record chart changes in vital signs such as height, weight, BMI (body mass index), and blood pressure for at least 50% of patients.
-Provide patients with an electronic copy of their personal health history.
-Protect patient electronic health information.
-e-scribing permissible prescriptions.

Along with the core objectives, there are 10 menu items. 5 of the 10 menu items must be completed in order for meaningful use standards to be reached. Here are 5 of the menu items:
-The ability to submit electronic data to immunization registries.
-The ability to submit lab results to public health agencies electronically.
-Using EHR technology to provide educational resources to patients if necessary.
-Categorize patients according to specific conditions, which can help with future research as well as organization.
-Incorporate clinical lab test results electronically into a credited EMR technology platform.

There are other core objectives and menu options that are specific to eligible practices and hospitals; however this is an overview of what is expected out of most physicians. Meaningful use consistent of standards, and these standards are the measuring sticks that qualify physicians for acceptance.

EHR software helps improve medical practice efficiency and increase focus on patient care. EHR software systems are now considered a necessity by most doctors and hospitals.
