Arm Yourself
The arms can also be vastly different within the various styles. Rolled arms often have corded seams and are cushioned for comfort. Some sofas have carved wooden arms and still others are completely armless. Straight, squared arms are more often seen on modern styles.
Determine whether the arm style will make a difference to you by thinking about how you sit on a sofa. Some people lean on the arms or even use them as pillows. Cushioned and rolled arms are best for them, or else a pillow will be needed to soften the arms. For more formal settings you can choose a wooden arm or something sleeker, such as modern metal tubing.
From the Sofa to the Floor
Some sofas are skirted with fabric to close off the space underneath and hide the legs. Others are left open and might display ornate legs or something simpler. Still others are made very low to the ground eliminating the need for either option.
The look of a sofa can be altered by that small space between the seating and the floor. Modern pieces are often left open with thick legs or a metal frame showing. More traditional sofas have a fabric skirting that matches the upholstery. Often leather recliners have a boxy shape that nearly touches the floor.
