A new marketing tool known as the Internet
Let’s not pretend, advertising is rapidly becoming one of the most fascinating industries to work in, followed by media like television, radio, magazines and newspapers. Exactly why do I say this? Well, advertising agencies are organizations that allow corporate organizations or small businesses to advertise in a specialized but cost effective way. When you need your drain unblocked, you phone a plumber. When you need you car fixed, or simply need to be ripped off, you phone an auto mechanic. When you need to book a flight, you phone a travel agent. Or when you need to advertise your never-before-seen, totally incredible, super-strong nail glue, you phone an ad agency! Again you ask why: simply because they have an ability to transform even a simple stone into a super-cool, super-slick, bouncy-water-slider. Yes, they have magic abilities, or so many believe.
Advertising agencies are much more complex than many could imagine. There are several types of ad agencies, each focussing on different types of market segments and offering various services. For instance, ad agencies have now evolved into joining the online world. Online ad agencies are becoming increasingly popular and entrepreneurs of all ages are jumping at the chance to make easy bucks by opening a web-based agency. They forget that you will have to go out and look for clients, and they also seem to forget that the relevant tertiary skills required to run a firm are crucial. Appointing personnel can be a solution, but would they really want to work for someone with no experience or knowledge of the industry? They might as well start their own firm! And that is probably what they will do as soon as they have declined your job offer!
The online world is a powerful source of information. Social media and networking is changing so quickly that marketing, PR and advertising agencies are offering it as a marketing service. While you probably might be able to digitally market your products or services yourself, ad agencies are very well connected: they know people who know people. They have ways of making things happen! They know what the target audience for your product would be and they sure know how to reach them.
Personally, I would love to work for an advertising agency. The process of making an ad is probably one of the best jobs. In my case, the crazier the ad, the better! Can you imagine how much fun they have when brainstorming ideas? Even so, it stays a job, an important one too, because whatever strategy they choose, will go out into the entire world for millions of eyes to see and judge. And if they mess up with one ad, all their life’s work, their good reputation and their clients; all that falls to pieces. One slip-up can make an agency fold. The increasing demand for products and solutions to be marketed on tv, radio or billboards is also the main reason advertising costs have spiked through the roof: it would be extremely difficult for an individual to advertise a product or service, unless they have a stash of loot hidden away somewhere. Corporate organizations are more likely to spend a fortune on a huge marketing campaign, and that is the type of clients the majority of advertising agencies are looking for. So, if you, as an individual are looking at advertising anything, look into your pockets, look really deep.
