Free Chauffeuring by Volvo

The 4th of January 2011, a memorable date not just for the start of the new higher VAT rate but also for the change in London Congestion Charge exemption rules. Many organisations and companies have been in talks with the London Mayor, Boris Johnson about the unfairness of the previous exemption rules.

Under the old exemption rules all hybrid cars were automatically given a 100% discount, meaning they did not have to pay the £10 daily charge. The new exemption rules means that any car that meets Euro 5 rules and has CO2 output of less that 100g/km is exempt. This means that now many new models qualify for what has been described as much fairer exemption criteria.

Volvo Car UK was one of the companies lobbing for a re-evaluation of the exemption rules, so on the 4th of January Volvo celebrated by providing a free chauffeuring service in and around central London in the three of its Congestion Charge free models, the Volvo C30 sports coupe, Volvo S40 saloon and the Volvo V50 sports wagon.

Peter Rask, Regional President of Volvo Car UK, said: “Through our ongoing Emissions Equality campaign, Volvo has been instrumental in persuading the Mayor to change the Congestion Charge rules and create a level playing field for all vehicles regardless of powertrain.”

Volvo currently offers three models with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km – the Volvo C30, Volvo S40 and Volvo V50 DRIVe. The Volvo V60 estate with plug-in hybrid technology that emits less than 50g/km CO2 will be launched in 2012; a prototype version of a full battery-electric C30 is already undergoing evaluation, the new Volvo S60 in Benfleet currently does not have a congestion charge free model.
