Common-Rail Technology

The Volkswagen Tiguan compact 4×4 is the first model to be fitted with a four cylinder diesel engine that features the common-rail technology from Bosch, designed to deliver impressive fuel consumption, reduced emissions and a more refined performance.
The new diesel engine has an impressive output of 138 horsepower with good torque characteristics, 320 Nm at only 1,750 rpm. The engines fuel consumption is at the top end of its class at 39 miles per gallon (7.2 litres per 100 kilometres).

The common-rail technology from Bosch ensures excellent performance and fuel consumption; it also makes the Tiguan’s engine one of the quietest four-cylinder diesel units in its class. The system has an injection pressure of 1,800 bar, it also consists of piezo injectors, the high pressure pump and an engine control unit are provided by Bosch.

The eight-hole highly flexible multiple injectors, deliver efficient combustion, low pollutant emissions and excellent engine running characteristics. Another major benefit is that this engine complies with the 2009 Euro 5 emissions standard.

In 1997, Bosch developed the first common-rail systems for passenger cars, over the years, the company went on to produce over 33 million systems worldwide and are currently available with injection pressures ranging from 1,350 – 2,000 bar.

The company’s medium term goal is to achieve injection pressures of over 2,200 bar to improve both performance and emissions.
As well as the injection system for the diesel engine, Bosch also supply the Volkswagen Tiguan in Taunton with lambda sensors, starter motors, alternators, central body controllers and ignition coils.
