Standard Horizon PF-40 Automated Paper Folder Review
Paper folders come in a wide range of sizes and abilities but near the top of the line sits suction feed models. One great example of this is the Standard Horizon PF-40 Automated Paper Folder. This machine is designed for high volume performance utilizing suction control and Horizon’s well-known intuitive automation. Here is a closer look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Horizon PF-40.
Strengths:
- A push-button control panel easily sets up the automatically adjusting fold plates. A built-in registration guide table keeps sheets flowing through at maximum speed. The speed is also manually adjustable in five different modes, ranging from the fastest, high speed mode, to the slowest, quiet operation mode. The high speed is possible by the high performance suction roller system.
- An easily operated, user-friendly console also offers control over the integrated counter and job memory. Up to ten jobs can store in the computer’s memory, especially handy for complicated or repeat jobs.
- Six standard folds are preset in the machine and include single, double parallel, short, open gate, letter, and accordion folds. Customizable folds are also available simply by selecting the exact size each fold will be. A fine tuning control offers exact folding down to 0.1mm. Two buckles are responsible for the wide fold variation available.
- The high performance suction feed system allows rapid speeds. The air volume can be adjusted to compensate for variations in paper stocks for complete accuracy.
- As many as 1100 sheets of 64gsm paper can enter the feed tray at once and fold as fast as 390 sheets per minute. Paper sizes can vary from as small as 125mm x 128mm up to 320mm x 470mm. Four standard sizes- A3, A4, B4, B5- are already programmed into the machine. Custom sizes simply require the touch of a button and the folder will self-adjust to handle them.
- Paper stocks can range from 52.3gsm to 157gsm. This spectrum can include glossy and coated stocks without scratching the delicate material or leaving smudges.
- Standard covers this product with a one year warranty backing.
Weaknesses:
- This machine weighs over 300 pounds and will be difficult to move. An optional pedestal with casters on the bottom is available and highly recommended if you foresee yourself needing to move this paper folder on a regular basis.
- One thing businesses often appreciate is a manual bypass for the feeding of multiple sheets for combined folding. This allows the quick creation of multi-page newsletters, mailers, and bulletins. Unfortunately, suction feed machines don’t generally have this feature. For a high quality friction feed folder with this ability, we recommend the Formax FD38x.
Overall, the Standard Horizon PF-40 is perfect for high volume applications. Busy print shops, copy centers and other companies needing professional quality folding will appreciate the clean and crisp folds this machine rapidly creates. The convenience and efficiency seen on this folder would be highly beneficial to any office. We think the Standard PF-40 is an excellent choice for your next paper folder.
