A Guide to Hypnotherapy as a Profession

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy where the patient or subject is treated under hypnosis. It is a proven effective way of dealing with a variety of health conditions and ailments, and for relieving pain. The person who performs the therapy is called a hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapy is also used to increase knowledge and awareness of the self and to improve physical performance in competitive sports.

How does one become a hypnotherapist? Different countries have different training requirements for those who want to pursue a career in hypnotherapy. The regulation of hypnotherapists also vary depending on the country the aspiring hypnotherapist is located. He should study the laws regulating the field and think about joining an organization that will help him become properly trained and holds him accountable to an ethical code of practice. By doing this the hypnotherapist will provide an assurance to potential clients of his commitment to provide ethical and competent services.

In the United States, there are many organizations that accredit hypnotherapists. In order to become a Certified Hypnotherapist, one has to meet the minimum standards set by these bodies for specialist hypnotherapy education. In 1973, Dr John Kappas formed the Hypnosis Motivation Institute located in the state of California. This institution offers 720 hours of rigorous training and confers the title of Clinical Hypnotherapist upon completion of its program. Dr Kappas provided the definition of Hypnotherapist to the Department of Labor.

In the United Kingdom, hypnotherapy is an approved stand-alone form of therapy. Hypnotherapy is not yet regulated in this country but thanks to self-regulation efforts the National Regulatory Register of Hypnotherapists was formed. At present, the UK Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organizations is working towards full regulation of hypnotherapists.

In Australia, the various levels of government prefer self-regulation of hypnotherapists as opposed to government regulation. The various organizations of hypnotherapists are working towards the creation of a Council of Clinical Hypnotherapists.

Despite the many benefits that are derived from hypnotherapy, there is still some distance to travel in order for it to gain the kind of recognition that other branches of medicine have. So if you plan to hire the services of a hypnotherapist it is probably best to consult with an organization that regulates the profession where you live. This way you have some assurance that the hypnotherapist you will get will have passed some standards for education and training. Also, such an organization would have some form of disciplinary procedures that will help protect you in case you encounter problems with your hypnotherapist.
