A Good Woman: Another rendition of Oscar Wilde’s Woman Windermere’s Fan which was filmed a few times over the years. This time it is set in Italy instead of England and updated from the’90s to the’30s. A number of Wilde’s British characters now are Americans; one of them is Mrs. Erlynne a sorely miscast Seek, a bankrupt adventuress who shows up in Amalfi and decides to seduce very wealthy, recently wedded Robert Windermere Umbers. Cast includes Helen Seek, Scarlett Johansson, Milena Vukotic, Stephen Campbell Moore, Mark Umbers, Tom Wilkinson, and Diana Hardcastle. (93 minutes, 2005)
Rich Girl: Incredibly gentle time filler in reference to “meager little rich gal” Schoelen leaving her life of comfort in her daddy’s Bel-Air mansion and trying to make it on her own, ultimately hooking up with a blue-collar rock singer. Cast includes Jill Schoelen, Don Michael Paul, Sean Kanan, Ron Karabatsos, and Paul Gleason. (96 minutes,’91)
Jury of One: Trudging melodrama in reference to a lady who goes to shocking extremes to defend her child who is on trial for murder and rape. Gabin plays the magistrate. Cast includes Sophia Loren, Jean Gabin, Henri Garcin, Julien Bertheau, and Michel Albertini. (97 minutes,’74)
Prom Night: This is about exacting revenge on the boys who were accountable for the mortality of a little girl 6 years before. Not the poorest of its type, although that’s nothing to boast about. Cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Casey Stevens, Antoinette Bower, and Robert Silverman. (91 minutes,’80)
Batman and Robin: The villain Mr. Freeze is trying to take over Gotham City, by freezing the town into submission. With the beautiful villain Poison Ivy trying to form a rift between Batman and Robin, the duo has a lot to deal with. As always they somehow find a way to come out on top.
Holiday Affair: Well-finished Christmas time tale of war widow Leigh, with a small child, who’s helped by good guy Corey. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Janet Leigh, Wendell Corey, Gordon Gebert, Griff Barnett, Esther Dale, Henry O’Neill, and Henry Harry Morgan. (87 minutes,’49)
Illuminata: Life, love, lust, and aspiration in a theatrical troupe in the beginning of the 2Oth century N.Y.C., although the feel is uniquely European. Playwright Turturro is in love with the corporation’s megastar/supervisor, and longs to have her act his latest play. Cast includes Jolm Turturro, Katherine Borowitz, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Rufus Sewell, Beverly D’Angelo, and Donal McCann. (111 minutes,’99)
