Suggestions to Finding Babysitters

Trustworthy, dependable and reliable babysitters are not easy to find. There are a few ways to find an appropriate sitter and depending on when the sitter is needed might dictate the finding method. Teens wanting to ear spending money are sometimes good candidates if they are mature, dependable and good with kids. The babysitting hours usually coincide with the teens availability, evenings, weekends and school vacations.

Sometimes asking around the neighborhood will bring a babysitter or two. A plus is if the family knows the possible sitter or knows their parents. That brings with it a little bit of security that the person in question will do a decent job. Avoid the party people as babysitters. Chances are the return home might be met with a house full of partiers. Teens make very good babysitters if they are reliable, responsible and have not started dating yet. That betters the chance they will be available if something last minute comes up.

Babysitting classes are sometimes offered by the local Red Cross, YMCA, the high school, library or church. The classes address such things as entertaining the kids with age appropriate games and stories, what to do in case of an emergency, basic first aid and CPR. They also address questions the sitter should ask the parents about their kids. The classes are geared to teens but anyone interested in taking the classes are invited to attend. These agencies will keep a list of available persons and match them to parents in need of a reliable babysitter.

Another option to finding babysitters is to look up a local online babysitting web site. Potential babysitters post a listing of their experience, availability and some of their back ground. Parents can review sitters in their neighborhood and may even find one they either know or know the family. There are reliable sites that carry such listing and are usually related to family oriented web sites. The web sites also contain information about how to interview and hire a babysitter and how to handle a babysitter who is perfect on paper and in an interview but just does not have the right stuff when it comes to being with the kids.

A child care agency is another option to finding babysitters. They have a listing of approved babysitters, and they match the babysitter with potential clients. The babysitters usually receive some sort of training and work on a trial basis before being hired on a permanent basis. The sitters are usually all ages and are available long term, short term, weeks in advance, last minute and on a regular basis. Even though these sitters have been interviewed and screened before being hired by the agency, it is also good idea for the parent to also interview the babysitter. It is important the babysitter be right for the kids and the family.
