Packing and Transporting Your Plants As You Move To a New Home
If you are in an unwelcome situation of having to move your plants along with you to a new home, that sounds unnerving. The plants are likely to suffer damages beyond repair if you do not have a plan in place as you transplant to move them hastily. It would help to know the ways to make it easier on the plants and seedlings. Correct packaging and ample care for your plants is the recipe for a successful move with regard to the plants.
First of all, begin with cross checking the rules and regulations and also restrictions if any and make sure you can carry your plants along with you. State and international guidelines sometimes restrict transportation of certain types of plants. Now that you know what all plants you can move to your new home, it is the time to transplant them the right way. Plastic pots are useable in case of short distance moves. However, you have got to be sure that you dig out the plants from their natural habitats at least two to three weeks in advance of the actual move. This is done to reduce the harm on the plants which might even kill them.
It is easier transplanting smaller plants and seedlings. When it comes to uprooting and packing the shrubs, enough soil around the roots must be kept to retain moisture. Do not add too little water, doing which results in disintegration of the soil while too much water spoils the packaging by soaking it too much. Once you got the amount of water right, wrap the soil holding on to the root of the shrub with a plastic bag and tie it around the stem to secure it. Also protect its leaves by enclosing it with newspaper or plastic; poke holes in it to allow for breathing. When you are done with packaging your plants, arrange them inside boxes. Insulate the boxes using bubble wrap, shredded paper or foam peanuts. Packing is just half the battle won. Transporting the plants is as important. Try to maintain a stable temperature and an even speed of your vehicle. If the conditions are cold, insulate the boxes properly while the warmer days warrant more shade and open air. On arrival remove the plastic enclosures around the roots and immediately water the plants. Wait for at least a week before you transplant them.
Many packers and movers do not transport plants and if they do, damages are not compensated. Moving to a metro city like Delhi or Bangalore could prove to be a challenge if you are carrying plants given the rush experienced by the movers and packers in these cities.
