Setting a Proper Brochure Template
Brochure templates are an important tool in brochure printing. It helps designers create layouts for brochures faster, and of course it also helps them make sure that their designs are within brochure printing standards. In this tutorial, I will teach you how to set a proper brochure template for brochure printing. It is very easy to do this using a lot of different desktop publishing applications. There are 5 steps all in all. Let us get started.
1. Set the dimensions – The first step in setting a proper brochure template is to set its dimensions. Now there are many different kinds of standard dimensions for brochure printing. Since there are a lot of different folds out there, there are a lot of different “length and width” measurements set for those kinds of folds. In this example however, will work on the simplest kind of brochure, the trifold brochure.
So with your desktop publishing application or design software loaded, set your new document with the dimensions 8.5 by 11 inches. This is the standard letter sized document. Just set it at the page layout controls of your software.
2. Set the pages – The next step would be the pages. Now technically for a brochure, you will need to create one page as the “front page” and the other as the “back page”. The front page will contain your inner panels that will be hidden when folded, and the back page will contain your outer panels that are shown when the trifold is folded. Make sure that you set both of these pages to “landscape” orientation so that you see the layout more clearly.
3. Set the guidelines – Next, we will set the guidelines. You will want to divide both of your set pages by three to make a trifold brochure. To do this, you will need to setup 2 guidelines representing the two folds to make three panels on each page.
Now, setting guidelines can vary from application to application, so you should use your software’s help section to discover how to precisely setup your guidelines. Whatever procedure you will need to do, you should set your first guideline at 3.65 inches from the vertical edge of the template, and then set the second guideline at 3.7 inches after that. This can vary of course depending on what you want, but this is the standard guideline settings that you should know.
4. Increase the size dimensions for printing bleeds – Now, with the guidelines set, we should then setup the printing bleeds. Printing bleeds are of course those extra spaces around your brochure template that gives allowances for cutting and folding when the custom brochures get printed. To setup your brochure template properly, you will need first to set some more guidelines in your document and then increase the document’s size.
First, add guidelines at the top, bottom, left and right edges of your document. This sets the boundaries of the brochure layout itself. Then go to your page layout settings once again and then increase the size of your document. You should add a quarter (1/4) of an inch all around your document, adding a total of half an inch to the length and width. That quarter of an inch should be your printing bleeds.
5. Add your template layout elements – Finally, you should then just add any other brochure template design elements that you want to add. This can be a standard image, background and any other design element that will be used over and over for the brochure template. Once finished, you should have your brochure template.
Once everything is done, you should then just save your brochure template as a template file. Some applications use their native file resolution for this, while others have actual template file formats that you can save your document in. Once you save them on the appropriate formats, your brochure templates should be ready for use.
Great! Now you have learned how to set brochure templates properly.
