The Republic of Costa Rica embodies a rich heritage of music that has captivated the hearts of many around the world. However, some of its native influences for instruments come from Costa Rica’s neighboring countries like Central America. Many traditional folkloric ensembles from Costa Rica involve using the central American marimba instrument. Ocarinas are another ancient influential instrument of Costa Rica that was used in folk heritage songs and native ceremonies.
Nevertheless, African music and Afro-Caribbean music has the vast majority of influence over the music of Costa Rico, especially because of rumba, calypso and many cultural blends that derive from the Caribbean. Furthermore, tourists and natives cannot forget the sensual genre of the classic music that is still alive today. In fact, the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional of Costa Rica has received international recognition and is popular in Costa Rica and in North America. Today, the music of Costa Rica is melting pot of vibrant culture that spans from jazz, Afro-Caribbean calypso and rock music. Although Costa Rican music has moved on to cover genres such as pop, reggaeton, and hip hop, its cultural roots will always continue to thrive within its ensembles.
