Looking Beyond The Pain: Grasping The Root Cause Of Sciatica Pain

I know that sciatica can be a particularly painful condition to live with. This is what started me on my quest to overcome my own sciatica pain. Maybe you’re like me and you’ve tried to use heating pads before to help relieve the pain only to find that it only comes back just as bad, if not worse than before. But guess what? It turns out that heat is actually the LAST thing you want to do if you’ve got sciatica. You should really be icing the area and then doing a few stretching exercises to get your back more flexible and centralize the sciatic pain to one specific spot.

Sciatica, in case you don’t already know, is an either stabbing or dull pain that can shoot from your hips and butt all the way down to your toes and feet or anywhere in between. This happens because your sciatic nerve is getting crushed for one of many possible reasons.

Once I figured this out, it really changed the way I saw my problem. If it was caused by a pinched nerve, then the secret was then to discover what was causing the pinched nerve in the first place and take care of that problem. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. branches out from the lower back and it runs down your hips, buttocks, legs, knees, and as far down as your feet and toes. So, you can experience sciatica pain anywhere from your lower back all the way to your feet.

Let’s take a look now at a few common causes of sciatica:

Be sure to be careful if you picking up heavy or awkward objects. This can put pressure on the sciatic nerve or even result in nerve damage.

As a natural part of aging, you might begin to experience gradual degeneration of your spinal discs, which can cause the space between your vertebrae to decrease, putting more pressure on your nerve.

One final common cause of sciatica is Piriformis syndrome. Your Piriformis muscles is located next your sciatic nerve and it connects your hips to your legs. When the Piriformis is irritated, it can crush or put pressure on the sciatic nerve and result in quite a bit of pain.

Once you figure out exactly what your sciatic nerve is and the things that can actually cause sciatica, you’ll have a much better understanding of your condition and how to fix it. No one wants sciatica, and I’m sorry that you probably are experiencing it if you’re reading this, but after you understand the basics of what is causing it, you’ll be able to fix it much quicker.
