American Idols Enters its 10th Season With a Makeover
American Idol, one of the most watched reality shows in the history of television, enters its tenth season tonight and nerves are tingling across the country. For a show that has been on the air for so long, there is a lot at stake as it enters the double-digit seasons. People have ingrained the format into their psyche but will, at the same time, easily get bored of the same thing. Shows like American Idol, therefore, have to walk the very thin line between remaining familiar to their core fans while, at the same time, doing things a little differently to avoid being monotonous. I think the producers of the show have done a great job of doing exactly that this season.
A face (and voice) I’m sure we will all miss this season is Simon Cowell. As much as we loved him in the show, Cowell himself had appeared to get bored of the whole charade and having him on for another season would have been bad for the show in general. The three celebrity judges this season are Jennifer Lopez, Stephen Tyler (lead singer of Aerosmith) and Randy Jackson, the only member of the original judging squad to remain on the show. All three, let it be noted, are heavy weights in the music industry and I expect the judging this year to be far more technical and specific then it was in the previous years.
The show’s producers have also gone the extra mile to ensure that the show returns to its original vision of producing the next great music industry giant. The first few seasons saw the rise of artists like Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry. Since then, however, winners of the show have failed to generate much interest after the season finale. A whole host of modifications (including an in-house A&R rep, extended Hollywood week, etc) have been added to rectify this. I, for one, cannot wait to catch the season premiere tonight!
