How to Perfect Holes in Metal

So, you want a hole that is perfect but despite everything you have tried the hole is just the smallest of a fraction different than what you need. Conventional drill bits can only get so close. A metal hole saw does good as well but it is generally used for holes of a larger diameter. After you drill a hole, what is a good way to make that hole within a 1/32 of an inch? If you know anything about reamers you realize that they are the perfect way to make a hole exact. Also, if you need to align two holes that have been drilled in two different surfaces, reamers are the answer there as well. You may be a little unsure of the profitability of a reamer or you may be unaware of its potential. Let’s explore the options of a reamer and at the end you will see just how useful this tool can be.

Reamers, as a rule, have three different uses expressed in the following: to make existing drilled holes larger; to make a parallel hole into a tapered hole; to bring existing holes accurately to size. There are generally two different types of reamers as well. There are the tapered reamers which have a point that is smaller than the desired diameter. These are very useful for enlarging a hole to exactly the diameter that you desire. These particular types of reamers are very useful and durable as well. If you have the intention of using your reamers quite frequently then it is recommended that you invest in a set of reamers of this nature. On the other hand, the disadvantage with these reamers is the need for a set of many. For example, if you want a hole exactly 7/16 of an inch, then you need to buy a tapered reamer that increases to the exact diameter of 7/16 of an inch. Then, if your next need leads you to a hole of 3/8 of an inch, you will have to buy another reamer that increases to the exact diameter of 3/8 of an inch. So, you see, you really need a whole set of these reamers to accomplish the various task that confront you. If you decide to use reamers frequently, then this may be a choice that will be worth its weight in gold after a period of time.

On the other hand, if you only plan to use a reamer every so often, like most DIY enthusiast, then you may want to consider the adjustable reamer. This type of reamer can be expanded or contracted to exact diameter needed. This eliminates the need for a complete set of reamers. It’s the “all in one” reamer. The drawback of this reamer is that it will not last as long as the tapered reamer. It also has a tendency to not be as accurate as other reamers.

As you look at your supply of tools; metal hole saw, drill press, step drill bits and coping saw, don’t forget to include a set of reamers to make the job just perfect.
