Triple J Hottest One Hundred – More than a countdown

Australians love national traditions. We are loyal patriots who love a good excuse to party and celebrate our sunburnt country. Australia Day, which is celebrated on January 26 every year commemorates the arrival of the first fleet in Australia at Sydney Cove in 1788 and is celebrated in true Aussie style – with BBQs, beers, friends and family.

Another tradition has morphed with the national day celebrations. Since the 1980s, radio station Triple J has been compiling a hottest 100 list of the previous year’s most popular songs. While originally released on New Year’s Day, the countdown is now aired on Australia Day.

The growth in popularity of the countdown – which now attracts over 1 million voters – has made it a fixture at any Australia Day celebration. The Hottest 100 countdown blares at all BBQs as Aussies anxiously await the announcement of the number 1 song. For Australians, it’s the perfect background music for all the celebrations!

The Hottest 100 is not limited to Australian artists, and boasts the title of the world’s largest music poll. All the songs and positions in the countdown are determined by the public.
