Getting Around Campus

Going away to college is an exciting time in life. Forming life-long relationships, exploring new ideas, and developing personally and professionally are just a few of the exciting opportunities college provides. Yet, in addition to that excitement, college also brings with it some interesting challenges; not the least of these is getting around campus. Here are helpful tips to help you safely and effectively navigate through campus.

Safety On Campus
1. Walk In Well Lit Areas.
Lighted areas will not put a stop to crime, but they will help to deter it.
2. Walk In Groups.
The saying, “there is safety in numbers” is true. The likelihood of being attacked is decreased when you are with someone else. Not only that, but should you need medical assistance while walking on campus (asthma attack, sprained ankle, etc), others that you are walking with can help by giving you first aid or go for help.
3. Always Carry A Cell Phone.
You never know when you are going to need it–it may be to report suspicious activity, call for medical assistance, or to use in case of emergency. Some campuses have emergency phones around campus. Know where those phones are as well. Have your cell phone with you, but avoid using it for non-emergency reasons when you are walking around campus. Just as phone usage distracts driving; it also can be a distraction for your safety while you walk.

4. Miscellaneous Safety Items.
Items to consider having with you: mace, whistle, flashlight, allergy remedies (inhaler, epipin, decongestants), campus map.

Dress & Apparel
1. Wear Appropriate Footwear.
You will be walking a lot around campus, so be sure to wear comfortable footwear. Wear walking shoes whenever possible. If you have a presentation and need to dress up, throw your dress shoes in your backpack and walk to class in your walking shoes. Flip flops have their place, but many college students wear them too often, even wearing them in the winter time. When snow or ice is on the ground, place grippers around your shoes to prevent you from slipping.
2. Keep Your School ID and dorm Key on a Lanyard
An easy way to stay organized while walking about is to keep important items around your neck on a lanyard. Beaded lanyards combine functionality with fashion. Designed or beaded lanyards can be purchased at a reasonable price, and are fun ways to accessorize your walking attire.

Transportation
1. Consider Whether You Really Need A Car.
Many freshmen assume that since they had a car in high school, that they will need a car in college. While it is nice to have the freedom that comes with having access to your own car, on many campuses it is not necessary. A combination of campus and public transportation, walking, and bicycling often enables you to better navigate through campus and around town. When considering where you are required to park, it may be quicker, easier, and cheaper to walk to many places around campus.
2. Walk When Possible.
Walking is great exercise. With classes it may be a challenge to get to the gym to work out. Walking is an excellent way to burn calories and stay in shape.
3. Understand Your Options For Campus & Public Transportation.
Study schedules and routes, and keep them with you in your backpack in case you have to reference them as you navigate around campus.
