Accessorize the Car Seat

Suffering with back or neck pains is never relaxing inside the car whether sitting or driving. Indeed, one of the worst things you can do when you have back or spine injury is driving.

A lot of years have passed since I hurt my lower back. Numerous go-sees to the chiropractor were unbearable. It’s never relaxing in the seat regardless of any position I did. Finally, I was able to travel contentedly. I was self-assured that what I was doing won’t add harm to my condition.

Some of the most common causes of back pain and discomfort are incorrect lifting, sleeping on too soft a mattress, incorrect posture, inactivity, overdoing it, making a sudden wrong movement, sitting in a chair in a slouching position and driving in a hunched over position.

Sitting inside the vehicle is different from your usual sitting position. Several reasons show that driving is more dangerous to a wounded back than by simply sitting. When the car is in motion, you are affected by the movements of the car, going from left to right and from front to back. The entire body shakes up and down, besides, the feet are actually in motion, pressing the gas pedal, clutch or brake. Both feet are on the floor propping up and distributing the body’s weight when sitting in a normal chair. When they are moving all about while driving, they do not provide proper support. Complying your body to a car seat that does not prop up your back causes neck and back twitching, headaches, weariness, and restricts breathing from the diaphragm.

According to Kelsey and Harding, American Journal of Epidemiology, people who drive a lot are more than twice as likely to develop a herniated lumbar disk than those who don’t drive. Studies of comparison has shown that pain on the lower portion of the spine is significantly linked to driving and that drivers who are on the wheel for over 20 hours a week from those who do for 10 hours are mostly like to be absent. Steering the car causes more injury than regular sitting or standing. And on an interesting note, driving a car hunched over becomes ingrained and is carried over into the movements of the day sitting at your computer. Slouching on the driver seat puts more pressure on the spine and neck, with the stomach jutting, the spine compacted, breathing is obstructed and head movements is restricted causing limited visions.

With proper bearing and propping up, driving can be more safe and sound. Let’s face it; we Americans love our road trips and our cars and there are several things you can do to make driving a pleasure and safe journey. Test drive the car first and check if the seat is comfy and go well with your body, assessing all seat adjustments, if you have decided to buy a car. Alter your position while driving when you ascertain that it is safe to do so, take a breather when you are on long trips and go out of the car and stretch, and take advantage of support materials that improves the comfort and security while driving such as neck and spine support pillows, lumbar support cushions, heated massage chairs (beneficial for long trips, and some are portable), or woolen covers to make the seat tender and cozy.

Create a safer, more comfortable environment in your car to ensure a healthy back and spine. Have a safe drive!
