Are PopUps Actually Serving You?
Let’s say that you have decided to learn more about something so you do a search on the internet. You then pick out one of several results that Google provides and click on it. Then, if your site finishes loading, surprise! Rather than getting to dig in the subject material that you’d been hoping to see so that you can keep on learning about your chosen subject, you are given a big giant pop up ad. This pop-up is an advertisement and no matter how many times you try to shut it down, it won’t close-unless you enter in your e-mail address. Eventually you are so upset that you just shut down your web browser altogether. That web page owner’s tactics haven’t gotten the best of you!
So many individuals loathe pop ups-and with justification. They’re frustrating. They intrude on what you’re trying to do. When they play audio or other noises on auto-pilot they get you in trouble in the office or with the people in your family who are also in the room. They make outrageous promises. They demand that you type in personal information into them if you want them to close. Sometimes they will set up cookies or other malware on your computer. There are certainly not very many people who truly like experiencing pop-ups and yet most IMers continue to use them. Why?
The sad and simple truth is that Internet Marketers use pop-up ads because they work. They get the attention of the viewer. They help IMers assemble their e-mail marketing prospect lists. It continues to be proven consistantly that a pop up ad will produce more opt ins than an opt in box placed in a sidebar or in the body of a web page. They occasionally even provide direct sales. Sadly, these stupid pests truly get the job done a lot of the time so, unless someone can make a better tool to use, most Web marketers are probably going to keep using them.
Of course that doesn’t mean that those same IMers should keep using them. What kind of benefit is there to an e-mail address that is exclusively given under duress? Usually what the results are is the person just opts back out of your list as soon as they get the first e-mail from you or even your company. Can your traffic be of high quality when nearly all of it clicks out of your internet site because they are offended by the pop ups assaulting them? Of course you need to make money but really–is this the only way to do it? Couldn’t there be a different alternative available to those who want to build an e-mail list and sell things?
The truth is simply this: if you have a good product or service, you aren’t going to need a pop up if you can present that product well. Concentrate on making a very high quality product or service so that you don’t have to count on irritating pop up ads to do the job for you. Create a persuasive sales page or splash page. Catch the reader’s attention and then refuse to give it back over the power of your written content and copy. The real truth is that an online Marketer will only find success and profit online if he or she creates something that someone else finds valuable. No pop up ad will ever have the ability to upgrade the true value of a product.
