Renoir was the the son of a tailor and a dressmaker, he was the sixth of seven children. He grew up in Limoges and but a few years later his moved to Paris. As his family was not wealthy enough therefore he could not attend a good art school although his ambition was to become an artist. He was sent to be an apprentice into a porcelain shop instead. In his leisure time he went to visit the Louvre where he could copy the Old Masters, and that was to be be his main artistic education until he managed to enter art college aged 18.
In the following few years he painted several portraits and several mythological works heavily inspired by Delacroix and Monet. These paintings were received with mixed reviews. At the time he was so poor that often he did not have enough money to buy paint. In his late 20s sick and tired with rejections Renoir joined several other artists headed by Monet for the First Impressionist Convention. His works were seen not always positively by the critics. He started to get recognition in his 30s and could then afford to travel and visit places like Algeria or Italy to get more inspiration. After that he rejected Impressionism as it was limiting his creativity. Also Impressionism did not use the color black but he absolutely believed that it was important and wanted to use it again in his paintings. Renoir married Aline Victorine Charigot when he was 44 years old, together they will had several sons, one of them was to became the famous film director Jean Renoir. Soon after he started to suffer arthritis which progressively turned worse nonetheless he continuedpainter despite the fact that he left this movement by the time he reached his mid 30s.
