Couple once too skint to buy lotto ticket scoop 4.8m jackpot
A couple who missed out on an 8.5million Lotto win six years ago because they were too skint to buy a ticket have scooped a 4.8million jackpot.
Sue and Lee Mullen’s numbers came up in 2005 – but they’d spent their last cash on nappies for their daughter instead of a ticket.
The Mullens, who are on benefits, thought they were jinxed and stopped playing until a few weeks ago – then they picked up a share of Friday night’s 25million EuroMillions prize.
That came after Sue dreamt they would win 4.6million – just ?200,000 short of their jackpot.
Lee, 38, said: “We used to do the lottery religiously with the same numbers but about six years ago we missed a week because we spent the pound for the ticket on nappies for our young daughter.
“We missed out on 8.5million.
We were totally gutted and couldn’t face doing it again.
“We have had a really tough time, particularly this winter. The weather was so bad we had to use a lot of heating, and the bills were huge. We were worrying about money every single day.”
Lee lives on benefits and a veterans’ pension after being invalided out of the Royal Navy 13 years ago.
Sue is unable to work after a car accident left her with back problems. The family live on supermarket bargains and Lee drives a battered Ford Mondeo.
Mum-of-six Sue, 40, said: “I checked the numbers online on Saturday and just couldn’t believe it.
“I was checking the numbers again and again.
“I refreshed the page with the results on so many times I broke a button on my laptop.”
The couple plan to take their children to Disneyland and buy a new house and car – but Sue says she’ll still go bargain-hunting.
