Caring For Your Mattress
You use your mattress approximately seven hours a day, seven days a week. It requires proper care to insure that it keeps providing you with a good night’s rest for many more years to come.
Make sure you regularly flip and rotate your mattress. While many mattresses coming out advertise that you do not need to anymore, it is still wise to rotate at least every six months. If you think about it, sleeping in the same spot for years at a time will take its toll on a mattress, and the inevitable dip will appear. When you first purchase a mattress, turn it every two weeks for the first three months. Then rotate every six months, or more if you think it is necessary.
Handles on the mattress are provided to help rotating and flipping. But do not solely use them. They are meant to be a help, not to take all the mattress weight. Write the dates you flipped your mattress on the mattress tag to keep track when you did it last. Finally a good use for the mattress tag!
Use the upholstery end of your vacuum cleaner on your mattress at least every other month. When you consider that a mattress doubles its weight in ten years due to dust mites and dead skin cells, taking the extra time to vacuum does not seem so bad.
Purchasing a cover for your mattress will help cut down on the amount of mites and cells which work their way into the mattress. Plus, it helps protect from spills and wetness penetrating into the mattress. Periodically throw the mattress cover into the washer with your sheets to keep it clean.
If your mattress does get a stain, use small amount of soap (or baking soda) and cold water, and gently rub the stain out with a towel. Set a fan on the damp spot and completely dry the area before replacing the sheets. Try not to get the mattress filling wet when cleaning.
Do not make a habit of sitting on the edge of the bed. This will create uneven wear on your mattress and eventual sagging. And, even though this sounds boring for the kids, do not let them jump on the bed. The mattress was made for sleeping on, not to take the weight of jumping. If you are taking a business trips for a few days, pull the sheets off your bed and let the mattress air out.
Make sure your mattress is sitting on the right sized frame and proper box springs or foundation. Typically, a mattress is paired with its own foundation when you purchase it. Follow the proper installation instructions when you get your mattress and frame home. The box springs or foundation will need to be rotated about every six months, but never flip them!
Following these quick tips will help ensure the quality of your mattress throughout its lifetime.
