How to prepare a wall for re-plastering the experienced way

Over time time a plastered wall begins to show the effects of wear and tear.Cracks, rough finish caused by glue size corroding the lime used in old plaster, crumbling, lifting are all signs of damaged plaster. Before the wall can be re-plastered the surfacemust be sound in it’s intregity.the primary thing to look for is the worst condition which is bulging, this is where the plaster is obviously bulging. Two factors using cause this, structural issues or the fact the plaster has lifted from the lathe backing. In this article we will assume it is the later.Next remove all bulging plaster back to a sound edge which is well adhered to the lathe. The next step is to clearly fill the void left, for this we will use drywall\plasterboard,ensure you pack out the plasterboard so it is level with the surrounding plaster.Using drywall screws fix the drywall to the posts the lathe is nailed onto.
Once this is completed, look for any clearcracks and dig them out with a scraping blade, scrape them into a deep v shape.Proceed to fill all dug out cracks with bonding coat plaster.Once you have fixed any bulging issues and dug out the cracks we will now use scrim tape over every crack ensuring the crack is completely covered by the scrim. The scrim tape is also used over the edges between the drywall\plastererboard and the original plaster.the final step is to apply a coat of neat PVA with a medium pile paint roller across the entire wall.Experienced plasterers such as Aberdeen plasterer 22 Charlotte Street, Aberdeen, grampian AB25 1LR tel 07743 451394 will always follow these procedures to ensure new plaster is applied to sound surfaces fully prepared to take a new coat of plaster.Plasterering is a satisfying trade to master and by using our guides there is no reason you cannot realise Expert results yourself.
