How To Help Kids With Their Homework
You know how hard it can be sometimes to get your child to do their homework. Their math worksheets sets for homework often prove to be a chore. After all, many children want to escape school as soon as they come home, and forget about it until Monday morning when they have to go back and learn. Homework is an integral part of education however, and without it the morale and ability of the child over time will decrease. It’s important that as a parent you encourage your child to put effort into their school work and ensure that their education comes first.
The best thing you can do is to promote a homework system at home with their school work and other work, with set times, and involvement of you as a parent. By spending time with your child during the evenings and helping them with their math homework you’ll be showing them the importance of learning, and being dedicated to the learning process. You’ll actively be playing a part in their educational life, and at the same time you’ll be able to try and implement more enjoyable aspects to the homework. You need to keep your child’s interest, after all!
You must remember that, even though you’re helping your child with their homework, it is in fact their homework and not yours. Remember also that you’re not the teacher, and your job is only to provide a place for your child to work, a helping hand should they need it, and positive encouragement to help them keep going. Stay consistent with these principles even when your child thinks that math is getting a little too difficult.
Definitely don’t let them watch the television while doing homework! Mixing the two together will give your child the impression that it’s acceptable to only place half of their efforts on their work, whilst they spend the rest of their efforts focusing on mindless activities like watching TV. Music is often good in the background, to create a more fun and enjoyable atmosphere, but television is only counter productive. It might seem harsh at first, but your child will soon be thanking you for helping them along the way in becoming a studious, independent and able individual.
So what if your child is struggling with their math work? Feel free to help. You need to be there for your child when they’re in need. Given that math will generally be rather basic at a young age, you shouldn’t have much trouble helping your child. Remember not to completely take over the work, but instead do your best to explain things and help implement that knowledge into the tasks they’ve been given with their homework.
Of course, if you find that your child is consistently struggling with their work then it’s probably worth speaking to the teacher. Your child might need extra assistance in school, or perhaps a little help with the assignments that they’re asked to complete whilst they’re there. Another option you could explore, in terms of homework, would be hiring a personal tutor for your child. Tutors are a great way of getting your child more involved with learning and homework, and can ultimately provide much higher results in further levels of their education. Tutors usually find it a little easier to connect with children educational than parents.
