Refined Oil from Fish Wastes

Don’t throw your fish wastes away-they can be a good source of refined oil. The Industrial Technology Development Institute of the Department of Science and Technology has developed the technology to produce refined oil from fish processing wastes using purification processes. Purified fish oil is a clear, red orange to dark red liquid with a slight fishy odor and a maximum free-fatty acid content of 8.7 percent. The major markets for refined fish oil are the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and paint industries.

According to ITDI, an estimated amount of 30-40 percent (by weight) of the fish being produced are accumulated as fish waste. This includes inedible portions like head, tail, internal organs and fins. Furthermore, fish that cannot be sold as fresh, and those that are too small for human  consumptions, add up to this voluminous wastes.
