BREAKING DOWN ON THE ROAD—DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO?

Usually when we’re driving, we’re on a mission—we have somewhere we want to be, and we want to get there according to our schedule. No one wants to breakdown on the road.   • Everyone out and away. You and your passengers should stay well off the road. Get out of the car and move away from it. Don’t stand in front of or behind your car.
  • No Road Repairs. Working on a disabled car on the side of the road is very dangerous. Don’t perform repairs on your car where you are exposed to traffic. Call for a tow.

    • How can you prepare for a breakdown?

  • Emergency kit for people. First aid kit, flashlight, blankets, food, bottled water for drinking, walking shoes are some things to keep in your car. Depending on where you are and what the climate is, it’s a good idea to have some clothes, too. For example, if you live in a cold place, you may want to keep a parka in your trunk. If you are traveling in work clothes, you may need to keep some comfortable shoes in case you have to stand for a while.
  • Emergency kit for the car. Flares, spare tire (in good shape), jack, and other tools should always be kept in your car, as well as your owner’s manual. Know how to use these things, and check up on them occasionally to see if they’re in good shape.

    • You are probably very familiar with the way your car sounds and feels. If something sounds or feels weird, have it checked out before you have a breakdown. It could be a warning to you from your car that a problem is developing. It’s better to address problems before they become breakdowns that leave you stranded.
