What is Naked DSL?
Sometimes the best solutions are not the most advertised. As people move in spades from landlines to mobile phones, people no longer have need for internet plans that include phone lines, yet the most advertised solution is still the DSL which includes the home service.
However, companies in many countries, including most of the big internet service providers in Australia, are offering a service known as naked DSL, which is simply a digital subscriber line for the internet without a dial tone for a landline.
The service is known as naked ADSL in other countries such as Canada. Most Australian providers have offered naked DSL for a while, with a variety of naked DSL plans.
Naked DSL provides a good balance between performance and price. Most naked DSL plans are less expensive than a cable internet service. However, for people who do not have a need for cable internet speed, a good DSL plan is the way to go.
The main difference in speed between cable and DSL is based on the differences in their technology. DSL requires the signal to be routed through a DSL Access Multiplier (DSLAM), and physical proximity to the multiplier affects speeds. Any Australian household considering DSL would do well to find out how close they actually are to the nearest DSLAM, and how that will affect service.
DSL plans also usually have much more choice than cable plans. Most of the time, cable internet buyers must take or leave the one plan offered by their provider, while DSL users can choose between more economic options if speed is not a great concern, and faster plans that still cost less than cable all told.
