If I had ten minutes with the president
.If I had the President’s ear for ten minutes, here’s what I’d tell him.
.“The point of a town hall meeting is to hear the unscripted concerns of the voters. The beauty is that this should be, by design, a time for explanation and discovery.
.You will not have all of the answers. This is not meant to be just a glorified press conference.
.But this is an opportunity to clarify what you can, and to go back to Washington and work out solutions to the rest.
.Regarding the economy, compare it to an aircraft carrier at full steam, having to make a major course change to head in the opposite direction.
.An abrupt “tight” turn at full speed might be done in as little as 30 seconds, but the ship could tilt 30 degrees in the process and anything not secured tightly i.e. planes, people, etc., would slide off the deck.
.More will survive in the long run if the direction change is more gradual than abrupt.
.For those who expected “change” to mean that in 1 to 2 years people would be back to work and all would be right, sure, it’s fine to list the revamped health care legislation and the new focus your administration has placed upon education.
.But show some empathy, some understanding here. Instead of attempting to divert the legitimate complaint of the attendee, explain that you are doing all in your power to get banks to loan money and to give small businesses the seed money to become prosperous once again.
.You are working to constrain foreclosures and extend unemployment benefits.Concentrate upon what the common man must endure these days.
.As for the schools, testing is a good idea. Continue to improve upon this with formative assessments along the way instead of just one big year-end test.
.But too many of our children are growing up without anyone providing lessons or examples regarding values and how to get along with one another.
.This must once again part of the curriculum.
.While war makes the few very rich, it drains our national economy, physical condition, and spirit.
.If the rest of the world fails to partner with us fully in combating terrorism abroad, then to hell with them.
.Let them stew in their own juices and instead let us withdraw and then spend our money at home strengthening our own borders and our own security and infrastructure.
.Finally, Mr. President, emphasize that the priority for some is to promote their own political party’s agenda rather than to look at what would help the common man the most.
.You agree with Mr. Lincoln that a house divided against itself cannot stand. You are doing everything in your power to draw us together–and you always will.”
This is what I would say to the President. What would you say? Economic? Career prospects? Education? Or somewhat you are care about. Anyway, you should catch this precious chance to express the issue you care most. And you are the celebrity.
