The New York Giants’ Easy Win over the Washington Redskins
There was not a lot enthusiasm among the team members of the Washington Redskins as they entered the New Meadowlands Stadium at East Rutherford, New Jersey. They had been lacking backup support for starters as well as the only player of note that might be seen was quarterback Donovan Mcnabb. Had been they anticipating the worst and in that way bringing it about? Or was it just that they had learned to anticipate defeat after a rash of consecutive losses. Whatever the case, there was no spirit that might be detected along with the snow itself seemed to have been an extra deterrent to their enthusiasm. 1 individual who really should have been with them was absent and this was their defense lineman. He had not reported for practice and was for that reason eliminated from the game.
It was a sweep of 31-7 for the New York Giants, the fifth victory in a series that they had so far won over the Redskins. The defeat of the Redskins was the eighth one out of the total of 9 games that they played for this season. Their play was as unmotivated as their entrance was and eventually, even the performance of quarterback Donovan Mcnabb was affected as he was repeatedly foiled and tackled by rookies of the New York Giants. As for the Redskins’ defense, none existed. The team could only stand and watch New York Giants’ 265-pounder Brandon Jacob hurtle back and forth on the playground. The only resistance they offered to the offense of the New York Giants was to futilely wave their hands as they watched touchdown after touchdown being made.
The new York Giants started out by scoring two touchdowns without effort. This was followed by some fumbling with the ball and an eventual third touchdown. And that was how most of the game went. The redskins failed to move as a concerted whole. They were disorganized and missing their cues. If they had seemed to be intimidated when they came in, they were looking bullied helpless towards the latter part until all the way to the end of the game.
You could see folks getting restless at the lack of enthusiasm that the Redskins met the volley of their opponents. The New York Giants dominated the play from beginning to end. And the New York Giants’ team looked like excited little children running energetically all around the field. There was little opposition due mainly to the absence from the game of defense lineman Albert Haynesworth who had not reported for the last team practice and was therefore disqualified from playing.
With this victory, the New York Giants are now up on the roster and are shoulder to shoulder with the Eagles. As far as the Redskins are concerned, the season may as well be over. None of their forthcoming games will be played with any further improvements in their rating in mind. They will all be just a part of the job.
Last Sundays’ game was not one of the better ones for the season. There was simply not enough fight in the redskins to inspire excitement in the crowd. It stands out as one of the classic examples of how boring and ugly a game can be if the people playing have convinced themselves, on beforehand, of their eventual defeat.
