Finding Out If You Have Auto Insurance the Hard Way
When my niece and nephew came into town they wanted to stay at my place because we lived in a tourist area, the rates for a hotel were high, and it would give them a chance to spend time at the beach without the full-blown cost of staying at the beach. They also thought they could save some money by flying down and using our car. It would save them a week’s rental fee and the price of the airline fee was under one hundred dollars a person. A very good price on the tickets for the fare during the time of summer they would be staying or so we thought. They bought the tickets early and were staying over a Saturday which was a requirement of the ticket. I did not have a problem with it but told them they had to make sure they had auto insurance for themselves because my auto insurance only covered myself and my husband as drivers.Of course, things started out so well and then things went downhill from there on the third night they were in town. I researched the internet auto insurance and noticed the coverage for short-term was not expensive and thought great this really would work out for them. Now, if I had only checked with them before they got to my house to see if they had checked the internet for auto rate quotes. I bet you can tell where this is going huh? Anyway back to the third night when they had the car and it started pouring outside and they were not comfortable driving on roads with ditches that are narrow on both sides. We lived near the beach and not on a highway so all our roads leading in and out of our area was like this. The car slid and hit the gravel on the side and went into the ditch. Front first of course because she was a pretty little car with a bruise on her face until that night. When she was towed out of the ditch she had black eyes and a broken front. This is the car we are talking about. My nephew the driver had a busted knee cap and broken ribs. He was hurting a bit too. My niece broke her arm and needless to say their one week vacation turned into six weeks and we no longer own the car. It was totaled. Each one thought the other had purchased the auto insurance so it was a loss all the way around. Lessons learned, take no one’s word and ask to see the paperwork. Lessons learned, let them rent a car.
