St. Paul’s Cathedral
Located in Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London rests St. Paul’s Cathedral. A magnificent Anglican church and seat of the Bishop of London, the current building we see today was designed by Christopher Wren in the sixteenth century. Reckoned to be the fifth St. Paul’s Cathedral built in the exact same spot, Wren’s edition is both enormous and totally captivating. Especially for guests to the Waldorf hotel London lucky enough to hear the choir perform in the afternoon. Both a beautiful and completely chilling experience.
Holding the record for tallest building in London from 1710 to 1962 (111 meters at its highest point), St. Paul’s Cathedral was the location of another memorable occasion: the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer. A venue not normally used for royal ceremonial events – weddings, christening and funerals are generally done at Westminster Abbey – the choice seemed appropriate for the magnitude of their marriage. Also appropriate to the magnitude of one’s spirit, the funeral for fashion designer Alexander “Lee” McQueen was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral attracting a solemn fashion crowd in Daphne Guinness, Naomi Campbell, Sarah Jessica Parker, Anna Wintour and Kate Moss. As chilling an experience as the choir performing regularly at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Bjork took to the stage to sing a chilling song in memory of Lee McQueen.
Located in the City proper, guests staying at the Waldorf hotel London can access St. Paul’s Cathedral via its eponymous Tube Station on the Central Line. Whether you choose to enter the Cathedral or simply walk around its grounds, guests to the Waldorf hotel are sure to find interesting memorials to look at.
