Hard hat liners came into existence as the result of constant complaints by workers regarding the lack of protection from the weather. The heat of the summer and the cold of the winter made it miserable for workers to work without some insulation. Some of these workers resorted to wearing knit caps or placing bandannas under the hat prior to the liners coming on the scene.
It is interesting that a hundred years ago what is today called a ‘hard hat’ did not exist. In the 1800’s, miners wore a soft small hardened leather head covering that had a shellac brim. In 1919, copied from the helmets of the World War I soldiers, a company developed what was called a ‘Hard-Boiled Hat’. This hat was made of glue, canvas and black paint but there was still no lining.
It was the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge that first brought these hats hats to the construction site. The first aluminum hat was manufactured in 1938. The fault found with this hat was that it conducted electricity which was very dangerous. In the 40’s the hat advanced to fiberglass and, in the 50’s and 60’s went to thermoplastics. This was again changed in 1982 to the hat that is used today.
As the hat progressed, so did other features such as air holes and padding. However, these left something to be desired as the wearers still sweat in the summer and were cold in the winter. Although the exact date and manner in which liners were first introduced cannot be found it could easily have been the result of someone’s wife who whipped something out on her sewing machine.
Today’s liners are available in a number of different materials, designs, sizes and shapes. There are even designer ones available on the Internet for those who want something that is unusual. They make it much more comfortable to work and have become an important item to have when wearing a hardhat.
Companies where dangerous work is being done are required by law that their workers wear hard hats. Many of these companies now recognize the importance of including a liner and have made this a requirement in order to have a more comfortable working environment for their workers. In these cases the employers furnish both the hard hat and the liner.
Some of these liners are made from cotton or nylon quilted shells. The nylon shells are designed to retain natural body heat regardless of the outside conditions. There are also ones that use a fleece lining in combination with a foam layer. This allows choices between the ones what work best in hot weather and those that work best in cold weather.
While something like a hard hat liners may not seem to be a big deal, in reality it is a huge deal. When a worker is not physically comfortable they are unable to concentrate on their work. This can be extremely dangerous in places where one’s life may depend on the actions of another. This small bit of comfort can make a huge difference in the safety of any occupation where workers are wearing these hats on the job.
