Suggestions To Maintain Your Paving

If your paving is covered in oil, filth and grime with a handful of weeds in-between, chances are that you have been neglecting your pavement completely! We’ve had renters in our home for the past two years and we went to check up on the property over last week. To put it gently, the house is in a horrible condition! Sure, we should have checked up on the tenants more frequently, but we trusted our rental representative with this task.

We once had a clean and welcoming entrance when we handed the property over to the renters – this driveway is now covered in colours of green and black and it’s hardly possible to see the paving under all the unwanted weeds and soil! Not surprisingly we are not amused with the predicament, but it’s time to cut our losses and move on.

Oftentimes a garden hose and a brush could do the trick, but in our situation, it has unfortunately gone way too far for that! Thankfully we have a high pressure hose in our garage area, so this should be able to get rid of most of the mud and grime that has built up over the past two years. A tough garden sweeper might be required to get rid of some of the tougher spots. Then we would also need to purchase a chemical substance or a type of stripper to eliminate the oil stains on the paving! I have a funny hunch that our renters had a backyard garage at our premises as I cannot think how else a private drive would end up looking like the interior of a grubby workshop!

To avert being in a similar predicament again down the road, we will invest in a proper sealant and seal the paving once it’s properly cleaned. Sealants are a good way to safeguard your paving from staining and it will also reduce the chance of algae to cultivate on the surface and cause discolouring. There are various kinds of sealant readily available and it is therefore important to choose the proper sealant to do the job. The one thing that I do not want is a shiny pavement! That never looks normal and it gives the perception that your paving has been varnished rather than sealed!

Some of our paving is more porous than other, so we will have to pay special attention to getting the correct sealers for the correct areas. As far as I understand an effective sealant will shield the paving for something between 2 and 5 years – that sounds great to me!

Another good plan to make sure that your pavement lasts as long as your house, is to replace any broken or chipped pieces as soon as possible. A little crack can quickly spread when left unwatched and your expensive paving can quickly end up looking like a spiderweb!

If you are considering paving your entrance, make sure that you use a reliable company with experience – this will prevent a lot of headaches later on!
