Things to Do in London’s Docklands
The Docklands is an area that lies on the River Thames in the east end of the city of London. The area has been refurbished over the past 3 decades after it went from being the biggest port in the world to becoming obsolete as the wharves could not accommodate the larger container ships that have dominated the shipping industry since the 1960s. The area is now the home to Canary Wharf, the second-largest London business district, and many other attractions and places of interest including the ExCel convention centre, and the O2 concert arena. There are many shops, restaurants and marinas, as well as dozens of hotels catering to businesspeople and tourists.
For the businessperson in search of fine dining or relaxation, there are a number of great restaurants and pubs. Gaucho’s is a favorite destination, with its rickshaw service between its bar on the waterfront and its main restaurant, which serves Argentinian steaks and other Latin-American specialties. The cigar girls also contribute to the unique atmosphere.
The Excel convention centre is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and contains thousands of acres of exhibition space and convention facilities. Companies from all over the globe hold meetings and expos here in the state-of-the-art facility.
The O2 is a high-tech concert arena that features performances by the world’s biggest touring acts. The likes of U2, Robbie Williams, Sting, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi and even Led Zeppelin have performed there. The facility is also used for sporting events and other performances.
There are a number of hotels in Docklands that cater to the business and tourist traveler. Many Docklands hotel offer impressive views of the River Thames and convenient access to all the facilities and attractions in the area. The Docklands area is also easily accessible from the city by tube and from London City Airport.
