Applying Feng Shui to Your Bedroom

Whether or not you believe in the old Chinese practice of harnessing mystical Chi energies called Feng Shui, there’s no harm checking some of the design principles it holds in properly arranging your home furniture and bedroom sets to channel these energies to your advantage. Some of them are simple practical guides that are well worth adopting. Here are some.

Bedroom Size and Color

While a room size is not as important as other aspects of a bedroom, one that’s too large or too small is said to have negative effects as the chi energy is easily dissipated in the former or can’t circulate well enough in the latter. So what’s the right size? Feng Shui doesn’t tell but one that allows reasonable space between furniture should be enough. But regardless of the size, the colors of the room can offset the negative effects.

Feng Shui recommends lush and soothing colors like pastels or earth and sky tones. Refrain from using shocking or jarring colors like hot pinks and reds, except for accents. Darker hues can make large rooms feel cozier while lighter colors in wall papers, bed covering and curtains can make smaller rooms seem larger.

Furniture Positions and Avoiding Room D?cor Clutter

Feng Shui cautions against cluttering the room as the free flow of chi energy is hampered by clutter. Tables and cabinets should not be positioned so that their sharp corners point to your bed. Sharp corners are said to be obstacles to prosperity. The bed position is critical and it is best placed so that neither side is against a wall, though the headboard can be against one.

Dressers should never be positioned opposite doors as this causes ill temper and restless sleep. Mirrors should not be placed directly across the foot of beds so that you can see yourself when lying on them. Feng Shui prefers that mirrors are best placed outside of a bedroom. For health and a good sleep, Feng Shui discourages furniture that lets you work or play inside a bedroom. TV sets, PC and even exercise equipment are considered distractions that are better left out of a bedroom.

Doors and Windows

When first designing bedrooms, Feng Shui advocates caution the placement of doors and windows in bedrooms. The principle is that doors and windows allow Chi energy to stream through a room and if they stream directly through beds, you could suffer restless sleep. For starters, never position beds so that your foot is across a door or window as this symbolizes death. Positioning a bed directly under a window or against it can cause restlessness in sleep.
