Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
The SAMARITAN® PAD Public Access Defibrillator (also commonly referred to as an AED or Automatic External Defibrillator) is an easy-to-use medical device especially designed to allow a non-medical person to administer lifesaving treatment in the event of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
No complex waveforms or controls – check that a green Status light blinks every 5 seconds.
The samaritan PAD prompts you visually and audibly with clear, calm instructions – starting with “e;Call for medical assistance.”e; A host of other prompts instruct users – from applying the pads to delivering a shock if necessary.
The pads are contained in a cartridge called a Pad-Pak™ which is accessible by pulling the green tab – (see photos on the right). Pads are available in an emergency even if the unit is still in the protective carrying case.
Once electrode pads are applied, the system automatically assesses the patient to determine if a shock is required. If not, the unit will prompt the rescuer to begin CPR.
Verbal and visual prompts guide the patient when it is safe to touch the patient.
If the system determines that a shock is required, the Shock Button illuminates as users are instructed to press it.
A CPR metronome tone is built in, accompanied by a flashing icon to coach the rescuer in providing the rate for chest compressions as recommended by AHA and ERC 2005 guidelines – currently set at 100 compressions per minute for 60 second intervals.
