In the Victorian Era the ‘Butler Ball’ was used as a mirror, when serving guests, to see if they needed something, thus avoiding continually gazing at them during the meal. Parents also used this ball to supervise their daughter and her date. By placing it in the entrance hall they were able to keep an eye on what was going on at all times.
