Possibly The Hardest Pickup Ever Made Was…

Potentially the hardest pickup ever made was one of the old WW II Dodge Military Power Wagons but they’re hard to uncover that do not need tons of work. This is a subject that you’ll always get an argument on, but as far as I am worried and from my fifty years plus of holding pickups and trucks, my 1990 Dodge W-250 4X4 with the Cummins Turbo Diesel was far and above more challenging than any other pickup I ever had. I acquired it brand new in 1990 and thought I got mugged paying 18 dollar,500 for a new pickup. Desire I could by different just like it for two times that now. I had the truck fifteen years and put 400,000 miles on it and should have my butt kicked for getting rid of it. The chap I vended it to virtually 4 years ago now is still driving it and it still runs good. Last I knew it had over 600,000 miles on it and still not using a quart of oil between oil changes. Yes I must have my butt kicked. The old body style (1989-1993) with the solid front axle were flat out TOUGH. Didn’t ride pretty good but were tough.

My brother was at all times a Ford man and even had a Chevy Diesel and always made fun of my Dodge, but after his Ford leaving him along side the road an once or twice and I had to go get him and the trailer with my Dodge, he decided to try a Chevy. That was the most awful pickup he ever had. Finally after about 6 years of troubles with Ford and Chevy, now he has two Dodges and loves them. His 99 has over 500,000 on it and his 2002 dually has only about 150,000 but you couldn’t give him any thing else now. I have had a Ford, Chey, GMC, Toyota, and even an old International but I ever get the other pickup it will absolutely be a Dodge Cummins. The GMC was my wife’s truck and an indeed pretty truck with skin and all but not near as TOUGH as the Dodge.

That pickup took me from Florida to Wyoming to Colorado and never once left me along side of the driveway. I hauled heaping loads of green oak firewood out from swampy forests in Florida. The only time you even realized tht heavy load was on there was when you went to stop. It pulled a huge gooseneck trailer crammed with baled hay in Wyoming up in the hills and over some roads that you would not believe. One time I was over at a friends ranch and we were out in the pasture and I ran into a praire dog hole and just stopped instantaneously. I was afraid I can have indeed messed up the front end however put it in four wheel drive and backed out of the hole. Everything looked OK and when I came home I took it to the alignment shop. Didn’t even need an alignment. Now that is tough. We had to haul our water for our place in Gillette and I had a 1025 gallon trailer that I pulled summertime and wintertime out to our house. A 1025 gallons of water weighs over 9000 pounds. That is a very good pull for a 3/4 ton pickup. At times I had to chain-up all 4 wheels and get in low axle 4 wheel drive because of the snow or mud but we never went thirsty or didn’t have water to cook or perhaps shower with.

All the time I was working on construction and went some pretty tough places from time to time though my Dodge never let me down. We went down off slopes and jumped big windrows. Even with nearly 400,000 miles, I was still getting 21 miles per gallon on the highway with it with nothing but routine upkeep and keeping the oil and filters replaced. The huge secret to any Diesel is to keep the filters changed and use fine oil. Always make sure it is fine and warmed up before you shut it off and if it is turbocharged, let it cool down a few minutes before you shut it off.

I have a good friend that is a die hard Ford fan and he is constantly telling me that ninety five percent of the Fords made since 1980 are still on the driveway. I tell him “Yes, the other ten percent in fact made it home.” The Cummins six cylinder has fewer moving parts and more key bearing surface than either the Power Stroke or the Duramaxx.

It was definitely RAM TOUGH.. Dem Old Dudes Go Everywhere Take the first letters of those five words and see what they spell. The hardest truck on the driveway. Grab life by the horns, obtain a DODGE 3/4 or perhaps one ton.
