Sale of Forts, Palaces, and Havelis of Rajasthan for a Noble Cause

Rajasthan the magic land is famous for its majestic Forts and Palaces decorated in pure Rajasthani style and built by & under the rule of the Rajput kings who ruled over the state. Now, many of the palaces and Havelis are transformed into Heritage Hotels of Rajasthan. One of the largest royal palaces in the world is Umaid Bhawan situated in Jodhpur, has been now converted to a hotel, by the Taj Group of Hotels.

After independence of India many of these forts and Palaces residences were taken by the state government, most of which are now on kept on sale by them. This step has been taken by the government not only to increase Rajasthan tourism but also for the development of small towns and villages. The money collected from the sale of palaces, forts and Havelis will be used for the development of small towns and villages in the state, which will automatically raise them from tourism point of view.
Madhorajpura Fort, near Jaipur, have been put up for sale, with the starting price of £650,000 and Badnore Palace having double sets of battlemented walls, elephant-proof gate and dozens of individually decorated balconies is for £70,000 rental per year. Those with limited budget can buy merchant houses of 17th and 18th century for less than $15,000.

The properties on sale are known as ‘nazool’, which means taken over by the state from their former owners after India became independent in 1947. As most of the havelis, palaces, and forts are old and are not used, the repairs and maintenance charges will have to be borne by the new owners to convert them into Rajasthan Hotels.

As these are all costly buildings and cannot be afford by common people, the properties are likely to be taken by original owners to descendants and rich industrialists.

Rajasthan in itself is highly rich state in culture and tradition. Moreover, its charm lies in its paintings, and intricate craftsmanship.
